Valeria Karl 89, of Bayville passed away on December 11, 2023. Daughter of Dimitrij Wolkow & Klavdia Reshetnjak Wolkow, Valeria Wolkow Karl, was born on June 23rd, 1934, in Kiev, Ukraine. In 1946, they were sponsored and able to leave war-torn Ukraine and move to Spotswood, NJ. From there, they moved to Newark. As a young woman, she loved going to Rova Farms, which was a tourist destination for the Russian and Ukrainian communities. She loved going to dance halls with her girlfriends and traveling down to the shore to roam the boardwalk and breathe the salty air. She met her husband, Richard Karl at a dance hall in Irvington. Once married, they moved to Irvington, and then Colonia where they enjoyed traveling to New York City to dance and watch Broadway shows. In 1970, they purchased one of the first homes built in the Sylvan Lake Section of Bayville and have resided there since. Her parents had purchased the house next door, where she maintained a wonderful bond with them, their entire lives. She and her husband enjoyed buying and selling clothes at Flea Markets and in 1988, they opened a store, in the Beachwood Shopping Center, "What A Deal, RJ Inc." as well as an indoor kiosk at the Englishtown Flea Market. Later in life, she socialized at bingo halls and played weekly poker games with her girlfriends. She associated with the Berkeley Lady Seniors Club, and enjoyed lengthy competitive games of Mexican Dominos and Rummikub.
She is predeceased by her husband Richard Karl and her parents. She is survived by her two sons and daughter, Walter Murog and wife Carol, Gregory Karl and wife, Christine, and Deborah Mitchell. She has 6 grandchildren, Kevin Murog, Melissa Murog, Richard Karl and wife Chelsey, Mellisa Vo, Ryan Mitchell and wife Elena, and Hannah Hyatt. She also has 5 great-grandchildren, Jake, Bradley, Brody, Ezra, and Autumn.
Viewing will be Friday December 15, 2023 from 5:00-8:00pm at Mastapeter Memorial Home, 270 Atlantic City Blvd., Bayville, NJ 08721. Funeral Mass will be Saturday at 9:00am at St. Vladimir's Church, 134 Perrineville Rd. Jackson, NJ 08527 then following after to St. Vladimir's Cemetery 316 Cassville Rd, Jackson, NJ 08527.
