Stephen “Steve” Fred Toff, 78, of Ocean Gate, NJ, passed away peacefully in his home on Wednesday, June 19, 2024. Born on April 21, 1946, in Philadelphia, PA, Stephen lived a life full of adventure, curiosity, and family bonds.
Stephen was a long time resident of Bucks County before he moved to New Jersey, growing up in Levittown, PA, and attended Pennsbury High School. He attended Oglethorpe University in Atlanta, GA. He later earned an Associate’s Degree from Edison State University.
Stephen became well-known within the Pool and Spa industry: being an active member of the Northeast Spa and Pool Association (NESPA) for over 50 years, often attending industry events; he started Delaware Valley Pool Service in the 1970’s, and later Toff’s Pools and Spas which later evolved into Toff’s Pool Inspections, serving realtors and home buyers. Stephen’s expertise was widely recognized, leading him to moderate and speak at NESPA’s annual convention in Atlantic City, and the National Pool Show in Las Vegas.
A true jack-of-all-trades, Stephen’s career was diverse. While attending university, he opened Steve’s Sub Shop in Georgia. His professional journey included stints as a student teacher, penny stock broker, sun tanning bed dealer, among other roles prior to joining the pool business. His business acumen and love of adventure took him on travels both nationally and internationally.
Stephen’s passion for water extended beyond his professional life. He enjoyed water skiing (barefoot in his youth), fishing, crabbing, boating and sailing. Stephen was also a musician, artist, and a wonderful man who was always there to help anyone in need and could fix anything. He loved his family and was involved in the Zumoff Cousins’ Club by being a reporter for the monthly newsletter as well as hosting everyone that wanted to come to the annual Ocean Gate Yard Sale.
Stephen is survived by his loving wife, Kim Toff (nee Komuves); his children, Caren Josephs, Michael Toff, Jenna Toff, and Dana (Luis) Toff-Vega; his sister, Myrna “Monnie” Ducker; his step sister Roberta “Bobbie” Goodman; his in-laws, Cary (Laurie) Komuves, Chris Komuves; his nieces and nephew, Lisa Ducker, Meryl Ducker-Horan, and Gilbert Komuves; his granddaughter, Jayla Josephs. He is also survived by multiple cousins, grand-nieces, and grand-nephews. He was predeceased by his mother, Rebecca “Rose” Rudin-Toff-Green; his father, Martin Toff; and his brothers-in-law, Arnold “Arnie” Ducker, and Craig Komuves.
A private memorial service celebrating Stephen’s life will be planned and handled by the family.
