Ruth Wagner Myhre, 86, of Pine Beach, NJ passed away peacefully on January 19, 2024, surrounded by her loving family, at Harrogate Retirement Community where she had lived for 9 years.
Ruth was born in Philadelphia, PA on March 4, 1937 to Theodore and Ruth Wagner. She graduated from Cheltenham High School and earned her bachelor's degree in Home Economics from Hood College in 1959. After college, Ruth worked for the Philadelphia Gas Company as a home economist. On October 14, 1961, Ruth married John S. Myhre of Staten Island, NY. Ruth and John raised their five children in East Brunswick, NJ.
She was a beloved wife, amazing mother, cherished grandmother, dedicated homemaker and caring friend. She was an exceptional caregiver to her daughter Susanne and active in community programs for the developmentally disabled.
Ruth’s greatest joy was spending time with close and extended family members. She loved spending time with family in Toms River and Ocean City, NJ. She enjoyed boating with her husband and was a member of the Beachwood Yacht Club. Ruth loved to travel, exploring near and far. Ruth and John clocked many miles in the station wagon, with the kids, for family visits and vacations. Most memorable were visits with aunts, uncles and cousins and trips to California, Texas, Mexico, Florida, Vermont and Maine. Ruth had the opportunity to visit many European countries and all 50 states.
Another of Ruth’s passions was spending time in her gardens where she excelled at landscape design. She was a member of the East Brunswick Garden Club for over 40 years where she formed many lifelong cherished friendships. She participated in and judged numerous flower shows and served as president. Ruth was a skilled seamstress; making clothing, costumes, blankets and her daughter’s wedding dress.
She was an active member of Nativity Lutheran Church in East Brunswick. She served on many committees and later, Ruth served as a teacher and director at Noah’s Ark Nursery School. She encouraged all of her children and grandchildren to participate in scouting and she supported all of the troop activities for all five children. She sewed countless badges and patches onto uniforms.
Fun fact: Ruth was always up for a new adventure - such as: walking on stilts, riding a unicycle or standing on her head. She took up skiing at age 40 alongside her 3 year old son Greg.
Ruth was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 44 years, John, in 2006. She is survived by her five children; J. Ted Myhre (Ferne), Susanne Myhre, Jennifer (John) Park, James (Jamie) Myhre and Gregory (Amber) Myhre. Her eleven grandchildren; Krista (Alex) Massey, Kurtis, Kyle and Karl (Laura) Myhre, Emily and Allison Park, John and Reagan Myhre, and Gunnar, Annika and Aksel Myhre, and her great-grandson; Callan Massey. She is also survived by her dear sisters; Nancy Shuman, Joy (Dean) Castor and Judy (John) Hutchings, many loving nieces and nephews and their families.
Ruth and John retired to their Pine Beach home which they built. In later years, she moved to Harrogate Retirement Community. The family wishes to extend our sincere thanks to the kind and caring nurses and staff at Harrogate Health Center, who provided excellent care to Ruth.
Friends and family are invited to celebrate Ruth’s life on Friday, January 26, 2024 from 9:30 am-11:30 am at Mastapeter Memorial Home, 270 Atlantic City Blvd, Bayville, NJ. A funeral service will follow at noon at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, 130 Cable Ave., Beachwood, NJ. Burial at Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, VA at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Ladacin Network, 1703 Kneeley Blvd., Wanamassa, NJ 07712. (A nonprofit which provides services to those with physical and developmental disabilities.)
