Mildred P, “Millie” Sheppard of Ocean Gate, NJ, passed peacefully on July 1st, 3 days after her 100th birthday. She was born in Camden, NJ, to Clarence Peters and Ethel Parry Peters. After graduation from Camden High School she worked at RCA for 5 years.
Millie married Elwood ”Shep” Sheppard in 1946 and they had 4 children. They briefly lived in Newark and then in Kearny for 28 years. While in Kearny she was very active in politics and the PTA where she served as President. She and “Shep" moved to their beloved Ocean Gate in 1976. It was in Ocean Gate when her family was on summer vacations that she met “Shep” while in her teens.
Millie’s love of Ocean Gate was evidenced by how active she was in the Borough. She served on the Land Use Board for 30 years and for a time was on the Planning Board. In addition she was in the Civic Club, Senior Club, and Republican Club. She served terms as President in each of these organizations. In 2020 she was elected to the Town Council and had the distinction of being the oldest sitting council person in the State of NJ. In the midst of her activities in Kearny and Ocean Gate she worked for NJ Bell, now Verizon, doing Exchange Layout. She retired from Verizon in 1986. In her spare time she was passionate about crocheting. Many family members and friends were the lucky recipients of her beautiful projects.
Millie was predeceased by her husband “Shep” in 1997 and her daughter Kathryn in 2010. She is survived by her sons: Robert and his wife, Nadean, Richard and his wife, Dawn, and Paul and his wife, Kandice. Also surviving are her grandchildren Dawn, Brent and his wife Colleen, Kelsey and her husband Chris, and Patrick and his son, her great-grandson Cole.
A time for family and friends to gather is set for Monday, July 8 from 12:00-2:00. She will join her husband at Ocean County Memorial Park, Toms River, immediately following the visitation.
