Mark Verpent (1954-2024)
Mark T. Verpent, Sr., 70, of Bayville, NJ, passed away on November 29, 2024. Born in Jersey City, NJ, Mark moved to Bayville over 35 years ago. He was a retired Jersey City Fire Captain with 36 years of dedicated service on the JCFD. Mark was known for his cooking (chili, sausage & peppers and a killer shrimp cocktail were a few standbys), growing the best cherry tomatoes around, his own special brand of humor and his love of a Friday happy hour. Mark was a member of the Bayville Elks Lodge Post 2394, where he enjoyed quality time with good friends over a cold Miller Lite, and was proud of his career as a first responder, but his most cherished role in recent years was being a proud Pop to his three grandkids—and especially enjoyed having them over for pool parties in the summer.
Mark is predeceased by his loving wife, Mary Jean, parents, George and Bernadette, and brother Timothy.
Surviving are his children, Jillian Flanagan and husband Jake of Toms River, NJ, Mark Verpent, Jr. of Beachwood, NJ, and Megan Verpent and partner Riane Ko of Bayville, NJ; siblings, Maureen and her husband Jerry Costanza (his best friend since the early JC days) of Manasquan, NJ, Gregory Verpent of Boonton Township, NJ, Kevin Verpent, of Hurley, NY, Susan Romano of Glenwood, NJ, and Carolyn Damrath of Saugerties, NY; grandchildren Riley, Jake and Cameron; and many nieces and nephews, extended family and friends.
Family and friends will gather on Thursday, December 5th, from 4-7pm at the Mastapeter Memorial Home, 270 Atlantic City Blvd., Bayville, NJ. A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered on Friday, December 6th at 11am at St. Barnabas RC Church in Bayville,33 Woodland Rd., Bayville, NJ. Burial will follow to St. Joseph Cemetery 62 Cedar Grove Rd, Toms River, NJ. Condolences may be sent by visiting mastapetermemorialhome.com.
