Margretta Gross Obituary

Margretta M. (Porter) Gross (Gretta), 91, of Bayville, passed peacefully on March 3, 2024.  Born and raised on the Mainline (Wayne), PA to Kermit and Elizabeth Porter, she was the second oldest of six children, Thomas Porter, Kay Durkin, Betty Anne Robb, Eileen Piombino, and David Porter, all predeceased.  Gretta attended St. Katherine's High School, where she played basketball.  She continued her education at Bryn Mawr Hospital School of Nursing, where she became a registered nurse.

Gretta moved to New Jersey in 1957 and eventually settled in Keyport with her husband, Robert J. Gross (predeceased 2010).  There they started their family and raised eight children, Kathleen Gross Andrejco, Joanne Coughlin, Robert P. Gross, Stephen K. Gross, Nancy E. Gross, Thomas A. Gross, Christopher Gross (predeceased 2004), and Lisa E. Gross.  She is also predeceased by her dog, Chuckie, who was her fur baby and companion.

Gretta resumed her nursing career in 1970 at Marlboro State Hospital, where she worked until her retirement, while raising a family of eight children.  After retiring, Gretta began to enjoy traveling, volunteering and her growing family (21 grandchildren, Taylor Gross (predeceased 1996) and 8 great grandchildren).

Gretta was an active parishioner of St. Barnabas Church in Bayville, where she was a member of the Altar Rosary Society, Parish Nursing Ministry, Interfaith Hospitality Network, the Red Hat Society, and the Golden Givers.

Gretta's role as a Mother extended well beyond her family.  Her legacy was rich in unconditional love, generosity, and complete devotion to God.  Her faith and resilience were instilled upon us by her actions, as well as her words.  Her perpetual smile, laughter, sense of humor and memories will live on through us all.

Visitation will be held at Mastapeter Memorial Home, 270 Atlantic City Blvd., Bayville, NJ  from 3-6:00 pm Sunday March 10, 2024. Funeral Mass will be Monday, March 11th, at 11:00 am at St. Barnabas Catholic Church, 33 Woodland Rd, Bayville, NJ.
