Joseph D Muttie Jr, (ret US Navy), 93, of Toms River, NJ, passed away Sunday, July 23, 2023, after a lengthy illness. Born and raised in Newark, NJ, Joe left in 1948 at age 18 to see the world in the US Navy, serving 4 years as an Aviationn Boatswain’s Mate. Returning home 4 years later, Joe met the love the of his life, Joan (Saccone). He re-enlisted in 1954 and he and Joan were married in 1956.
As they both loved to say, “we were dumb and dumber, heading down the road.” While serving, they were stationed all over the United States, including Guam, and raised their family for 22 years. Retiring in 1972, Joe and family returned to their native New Jersey and settled in Toms River. Joe once again served his country as a federal employee at Lakehurst NAS (now Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakeurst). Finally retiring in 1994, Joe and Joan traveled, bought a place in Key West and enjoyed their family making memories. Family was everything to Joe but he also loved the NY Giants, NY Yankees, reading, history, hunting, traveling and eating Joan’s cooking. He was a lifetime member of the Aviation Boatswain’s Mates Association (ABMA).
Joe is predeceased by his parents, Joseph D. & Catherine Muttie, Sr, his sisters Catherine Ryder and Constance Metcalf. He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Joan and his three children, Joseph Muttie and wife Maureen of Jupiter, FL, Michael Muttie and wife Lisa of Cape Coral, Fl. and daughter Lisa and husband Bruce Moore of Middletown, NJ; his grandchildren Michael Muttie Jr, Nicholas Muttie and finance Sophia Lentz, Ryan Moore, Hunter Moore, Gianna Magnotti and Brian Murphy as well as his sister Elizbeth and husband Norman Weed of Beachwood and brother Richard and wife Dolores Muttie of Pennyslvania and numerous nieces and nephews, in-laws and some out-laws.
Viewing hours for family and friends will be Wednesday, August 2, 2023, from 4pm to 8 pm at Mastapeter Memorial Home, 270 Atlantic City Blvd., Bayville, NJ. Funeral will be Thursday, August 3rd, 10am at the funeral home or meet at St Joseph’s Roman Catholic Church, Hooper Avenue at Hadley Avenue, Toms River to celebrate a 11:30 am Funeral Mass. Burial will follow to Brigadier General William C. Doyle Memorial Cemetery, 350 Province Line Road, Wrightstown, NJ at 1:30pm.
