John James McGovern

John James McGovern, 89, of Brooklyn, NY, passed away on July 25, 2023, in Ocean County, NJ. He was born in Brooklyn, NY, to Patrick and Katherine McGovern. John is preceded in death by his parents and his only brother, Kevin McGovern.

John was a gregarious and loving man, known for his love of jokes and his warm personality. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him. He is survived by his beloved wife of 64 years, Ann McGovern (nee Crane). John is also survived by his son Peter and his wife Lucia, their children Chloe, Izzy, and Joe, as well as his daughter Gerrie, her husband Chuck, their children Chuck and Ryan and his wife Cathey and their children Elyza and Rylan.  John was also blessed with many nieces and nephews.  

During the Korean War, John served as a Navy hospital corpsman, utilizing his medical skills to provide crucial care to his fellow servicemen. His dedication and service to his country will always be remembered. After his military service, John pursued his Bachelor's and Master's degrees at Pace University in Manhattan.  He started a career as a high school teacher in New York for 23 years. He was known for his passion for education and his ability to inspire his students. Later, when he “retired” he became a professor at Georgian Court College for 22 years, where he continued to shape young minds.

In his free time, John was a lector and eucharistic minister in his parish.  He served as a cub scout troop leader and spent many summers as an x-ray technician.  He was an active member of the Coast Guard Auxiliary for 35 years, an avid swimmer and enjoyed spending time on boats and with his family.  

A memorial service to honor John's life will be held at Mastapeter Memorial Home, 270 Atlantic City Blvd., Bayville, on Monday, July 31, 2023, from 5-7 PM. Friends and family are invited to attend and pay their respects to a remarkable man who touched the lives of many. In lieu of flowers, donations to Bayada Hospice or The National Multiple Sclerosis Society (New Jersey Chapter).  

John will be remembered for his unwavering dedication to his family, his country, and his community. May he rest in peace.
