James W. McEwan, 89, of Bayville passed away on June 17, 2023. Jim was born in Brooklyn, N.Y. to Emma (nee Herdrich) and Charles McEwan. In his youth, he was an avid soccer player and boxed for the Police Athletic League. Upon graduating from Bushwick High School, he enlisted in the Navy and served on the fleet tankers USS Pawcatuck and USS Aucilla during the Korean War. After completing his four-year hitch, he attended a shipmate’s wedding, where he met his forever love Ginny (nee Baffa). They married soon thereafter and settled in Jersey City, where they had four children: Charles, James, Anne and Russell. In 1967, the family moved to Manalapan, N.J., where they resided for 26 years.
Jim had a long and successful career with Citibank, retiring as a Senior Vice President/Operations Head. During his time with the bank, he was instrumental in launching some of the earliest telephone customer service and electronic check processing systems in the industry. Jim completed both the standard and advanced study programs at The American Institute of Banking, as well as completing executive training programs at Wabash College and The University of Michigan Graduate School of Business Administration.
In 1993, shortly after retiring, Jim and Ginny moved to the Sonata Bay Community in Bayville, N.J. Both he and Ginny enjoyed playing golf, and he was particularly proud of recording 3 holes-in-one over the years. Jim and Ginny also traveled extensively during their leisure years, taking “find your roots” trips to Scotland, Germany, and Italy. They also enjoyed many family vacations in Emerald Isle, N.C., at Disney World, and in Vermont. Not to be forgotten were their monthly treks to Atlantic City with their dear friends, Hilda and Erich Ruhl.
Jim and Ginny relished every opportunity to be with their children and grandchildren and were extremely proud of their individual accomplishments. Jim was predeceased by his wife, Ginny, as well as oldest son, Charles. Surviving are his son James, daughter Anne Finley (John), son Russell (Toni) and daughter-in-law Karen, as well as 10 grandchildren: Christopher (Lex), Susan, Kaitlin (Pat), Rick, Lindsay (Zack), Caroline, Heather, James, Kelly and Emily.
There will be a viewing for Jim on Wednesday, June 21, 2023 from 4-7pm at Mastapeter Memorial Home, 270 Atlantic City Blvd, Bayville, NJ 08721. On Thursday, June 22nd a Funeral Mass at 9:30am at St. Barnabas Church, 33 Woodland Rd, Bayville with an entombment immediately following at St. Gabriel’s Cemetery & Chapel Mausoleums, 549 County Rd 520, Marlboro, NJ 07746
As Jim loved animals and supported numerous related charities, donations to the ASPCA in lieu of flowers are appreciated.
