James Syanovitz Obituary

The family of James M. Syanovitz would like you to join us in the celebration of his life this Wednesday and Thursday. He passed away on 8/23/24. Those who knew Jimmy knew that he was one of the last of the old “Pineys,” and he was proud of it. He loved the woods, his hunting dogs, the water—in his boat “Trixie”—and was always proud of being a top-notch crane operator for Local Union 825 of South Jersey. He retired over 25 years ago and lived happily ever after in his garage with all his buddies, sitting around what I called “The Knights of the Round Table,” with the old pot-belly stove and beer to keep them coming back. Thanks, Jerry, for the firewood.

Jimmy was born in Passaic on May 16, 1938, to Michael Syanovitz and Lillian (Sherwood) Syanovitz. They moved to Pinewald in 1946. He attended Bayville School and was part of the first junior class when Central Regional opened in 1956. That same year, he met a little Southern girl named Karen Wade, and they were married in January 1957, which would have been 68 years this January. They had 4 children: Jimmy Jr. (1958, deceased in 2018), followed by 3 girls—Kim Fierro, Lanoka Harbor; Tracy Syanovitz, Oregon; and Laura Allotta, Manahawkin.

Also predeceased are Jimmy’s sister, Barbara Phillip, her husband, Hugo, and their son, Hugo Jr., of Virginia, as well as his brother, Ronnie Syanovitz; his brother-in-law, Greg DePaul; and his nephew, Troy Syanovitz. He is survived by his brother, Mickey, and his wife, Karen, of Pinewald; his youngest sibling, Candy DePaul, and Tommy Weipz, of Bayville; his sister-in-law, MaryAnn Sorrentino, of Toms River; and Leona Syanovitz, of Bayville. Jimmy was surrounded by a large family of nieces and nephews, and he held a special place in his heart for his 9 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

Visiting hours will be Wednesday from 2pm to 4pm and 7pm to 9pm at the Mastapeter Memorial Home, 270 Atlantic City Blvd., Bayville. Funeral Thursday, 10:30am at the funeral home and services at 11:30am with burial to follow at 12:30pm to Good Luck Cemetery, Haines Street, Lanoka Harbor.
