George J. Swanson
June 9, 1943 – July 7, 2025
Bayville, New Jersey
George J. Swanson, 82, of Bayville, passed away peacefully and returned home to his Lord on July 7, 2025. Born in Brooklyn and raised in Levittown, NY, he lived in several places before settling in Bayville in 1972.
George was a loving husband and role model father (to more than just his boys). His innate love of helping others drove his life. From helping with repairs of anything, to being a great listener and counselor, and most of all a friend. His endless repertoire of jokes from corny to truly insightful could turn any situation into a room of happy faces. He touched so many lives in a positive way.
A true jack of all trades, George held his first job as a teenager in a local repair shop and was especially gifted at figuring out anything mechanical. He proudly served in the U.S. Marine Corps, where he trained and worked as a jet mechanic. Over the years, George repaired copy machines, was a certified livery driver, and ran his own auto detailing business. He also worked in sales, where his warm personality and genuine interest in people made him a natural. He had a lifelong love of cars and was always ready to help friends and family with repairs—or to negotiate a better deal when someone was car shopping.
George was deeply devoted to his faith and served for many years as a Deacon at St. Barnabas Church in Bayville. He and his wife Connie taught both CCD and Pre-Cana classes, guiding children and engaged couples with compassion and faith. He frequently visited local nursing homes to offer prayers and communion to residents, and he provided comforting services to grieving families at wakes and funerals. He was also proudly — if unofficially — known as the head of the Sunday School Coffee Ministry, always making sure both kids and adults were welcomed with warmth and a smile.
George also served as Chaplain for the Beachwood Fire Department, offering spiritual support to local first responders. Through all his ministries, George touched many lives with his wisdom, humility, and trademark sense of humor.
He was predeceased by his two sisters, Patricia and Ellen. George will be lovingly remembered by his beloved wife of 60 years, Connie; his three sons, James and his wife Dana, Ronald and his wife Karen, and Sean and his wife Kristen; and his seven grandchildren: Nicholas and his husband Kevin, Hailie, Thomas, Madison, Anthony, Emma, and Michael.
He is also survived by his siblings, Kathy Carroll, Maryanne Ruisi and her husband Pete, Christine Swanson, and William Swanson and his wife Janet; his sister-in-law Faye Yuppa; and many loving nieces, nephews, cousins, and dear friends.
Visitation will be held on Friday, July 11, 2025, from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Mastapeter Memorial Home, 270 Atlantic City Blvd., Bayville, NJ. Saturday, July 12, 2025 a viewing will be offered from 10:00-11:00am at St. Barnabas Church, 33 Woodland Road, Bayville followed by a Funeral Mass.
Committal will be private for the family at Brig. Gen. William C. Doyle Veterans Memorial Cemetery, to be held at a later date.
