Ellen Dorothy (Devine) Hammell

Ellen Dorothy (nee Devine) Hammell, 76, of Point Pleasant and Whiting, NJ, passed away peacefully on Saturday, June 21, 2025 at Arista Care at Whiting Nursing & Rehab.

Born in Neptune, NJ on November 15, 1948, Ellen grew up in the Wanamassa section of Ocean Township. In March 1974, she married the love of her life, Harry Bruce Hammell, and together they raised three children: Tracy Ann (Devine) Hammell  Provenzano, Kristin Sarah (Hammell) Helmlinger, and Harry Bruce Hammell, Jr. 

Ellen lived in Point Pleasant from 1970-1998, where she devoted herself to raising her family. She later lived in Brick, NJ before settling in Whiting in 2012.

Many knew Ellen from her years of hard work as a waitress and later hostess at Cohen's Deli in Brick during the early 1980s, and then as a beloved night shift waitress at the OB Diner for many years. Her dedication and work ethics were unmatched, and her kindness left a lasting impression on all who met her.

She was a devoted and loving mother---gentle, sweet, and kind, yet fiercely strong and never afraid to stand her ground. Though small in stature at just under 5'3", Ellen's spirit was mighty.

Ellen found great joy in nature, particularly in gardening, where her green thumb brought beauty to every yard she touched. She was happiest outdoors---by the pool or on the beach---always making sure she had the "best tan" on the block.

Ellen was predeceased by her beloved parents, Joseph and Dorothy Devine: her husband, Harry Bruce Hammell; her daughter Kristin Sarah (Hammell) Helmlinger; her son-in-law Charles Joseph Provenzano; her brother, Joseph Devine, her sister Diana Partusch; and her brother-in-law, Gary White.

She is survived by her loving children, Tracy and Harry Jr., and was the cherished grandmother ("Grammer") to Andrew, Kenna, Joseph, Miranda, and Nicholas. Ellen is also survived by her siblings: Dr Christopher Devine and his wife Connie, James Devine, Kevin Devine, and her sister Susan White. She will be lovingly remembered and deeply missed by many nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.

Memorial Service will be held on Thursday July 10, 2025 from 6:00-8:00pm with a Memorial service at 7:30pm at Mastapeter Memorial Home, 270 Atlantic City Blvd., Bayville, NJ 08721.
