Caroline Higgins

Caroline Jean Higgins, age 82, passed away on Friday, March 18, 2022 at Community Memorial Hospital in Toms River, New Jersey. Carol was born on June 24, 1939 in New York, New York to Dominick and Anna Bozzo. The youngest of four children, Carol often talked about her wonderful childhood and how much she loved family picnics with relatives at Rye Beach. A graduate of Hunter College, Carol was a beloved kindergarten teacher for 25 years with most of her career spent teaching at Bayville Elementary School in Bayville, New Jersey.

On August 9, 1966, Carol married Thomas Malachy Higgins and the couple settled in Bayville where they resided until their deaths. Together, they had three children, Christopher, Thomas Jr., and Nora. Carol’s children were her pride and joy and they loved her immensely. She was especially close to her daughter, Nora, who served as her devoted caregiver in the last two
years of her life.

Carol loved simple things from the first snow to a good book and a cup of coffee. She delighted in her grandchildren and spending time with friends in her close knit neighborhood. Carol is remembered by everyone who knew her for her big smile, cheerful laugh, and positive outlook on life despite any circumstances. Carol’s greatest gift was kindness and she made everyone around her feel welcomed.

Carol is preceded in death by her parents, brother Charles, brother Augustine, and sister Virginia as well as, son Christopher, and husband of 53 years, Thomas. She is survived by her son, Thomas Higgins, Jr. (Sharon) of Mt. Pleasant, SC, granddaughters Isabella, Anna Caroline, and Lily; daughter Nora Shand of Bayville, NJ, grandsons Riley and Quincy, numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews, and many treasured friends.

A celebration of life service will be held on Thursday, March 24, 2022 from 6 p.m.– 8 p.m. at Mastapeter Memorial Home located at 270 Atlantic City Blvd. in Bayville, New Jersey.
