Alfred Alonzo Obituary

Alfred R Alonzo, 92 (AKA: Uncle Al) a lifetime resident and legend of Ocean Gate, passed away on July 16, 2022 at home with his loving daughter Aileen by his side. His current home was only 100 feet from where he was born on June 3, 1930.

Alfred was a proud member of the United States Air Force and loved the American Flag, he would greet any military when out shaking their hand and thanking them for their service.

He married the love of his life, Edna Riedel on March 4, 1950. They made their home in Ocean Gate until she passed in 1998. He worked for his brother’s company Walter H Alonzo, Co., as a mason, that company was instrumental in building many homes in Ocean County. He retired in 1993 and later worked as a health inspector for the borough of Ocean Gate and a delivery driver for Bayville Flowers and Gifts.

Second to the great love he had for his family was the loyalty to the Borough of Ocean Gate. He was happy and friendly person, loved by many residents, always armed with a kind smile and positive words. He would tell stories of some of his best times in his life which included: camping with his family, helping his friend Nick who owned Cocalico Creek Campground in PA and up until a few years ago he still went clamming with his buddies Gil and Tony accompanied by Aileen at times in his little Boston Whaler.

Alfred was an active volunteer in Ocean Gate: as a lifetime member of the Ocean Gate Fire Department, he served many times as Chief and Asst. Chief, as well as a past member of the Ocean Gate First Aid Squad. He was one of the founding members and President of the Ocean Gate Historical Society. He spent his time there sharing stories about the town. He was instrumental in setting up the museums and acquiring the caboose for Ocean Gate. He was also a member of the Ocean Gate Republican Club and the Ocean Gate Veterans’ Association.
Alfred was a long-time member of St Paul Lutheran Church in Beachwood, NJ.

Alfred was predeceased by his parents Andrew and Marion (Roop), his wife and love of his life, Edna, his son, Alfred (Bobby), his brothers, Andrew, Walter, Harry, and Norman Alonzo, his sister Dorothy Nolze, and many other family members.

He is survived by his daughter, Aileen, his Grandcats, Annie and Allie, his sister-in-law Joanne, his special Cousin Muriel Turtora with whom he shared the same birthdate (not year), and hosts of nieces, nephews, cousins and many friends.

Alfred loved feeding the birds and handfeeding chipmunks. One of his great passions was building many styles of birdhouse and giving them away to neighbors and friends you will see many in our town.

Alfred touched many lives both young and old and will be sorely missed.

Flowers will be accepted and or donations can be made to the Ocean Gate Fire Department - PO Box 613 – Ocean Gate, NJ  08740.
